United States Navy Chief Warrant Officer Richard Peter Winkle (service N? 206-13-68) was born in Denmark on April 16th 1903. He was naturalized as a U. Citizen on May 27th 1921 while living in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Richard enlisted as a seaman in the U. Navy in the mid 1920’s. He was promoted to a Machinist Mate and honorably discharged (character good) in 1929 and issued a Good Conduct Medal. He reenlisted for 4 years, holding Continuous Service Certificate N? 0201705. Machinist Mate Winkle was honorable discharged and reenlisted again on October 28th 1933 at the submarine base New London, Connecticut. He was issued a second award bar for his Good Conduct Medal. Winkle served aboard the submarine tender U. Canopus during the late 1930’s and was transferred to submarine U. S-40 on July 5th 1939. He was then promoted to Chief Machinist Mate on November 16th 1939 and honorably discharged, earning his 3rd award bar for his Good Conduct Medal. The Chief reenlisted October 26th 1940 in Manila, Philippines for 4 years while serving aboard the submarine U. During the summer of 1940, hostilities on the Asiatic mainland brought the S-40 to conduct patrols among the Philippine Islands and in adjacent waters. With 1941, joint United States Army-United States Navy exercises were conducted at Corregidor, and patrols off likely invasion beaches were stepped up. Chief Winkle participated in 5 war patrols aboard the S-40 over the next year. Her early patrols were in the Philippine waters, after the fall of Manila and Cavite the S-40 then sailed for the East Indies and the Western Australian Coast to conduct war patrols. On July 3rd 1942 the Chief was transferred to submarine base New London, Connecticut for assignment, via the U. He was then transferred to the submarine U. 0-4 November 4th 1943. The 0-4 was stationed at New London submarine school, training students until wars end. Chief Winkle was honorably discharged on October 25th 1944, he issued his 4th award bar for his Good Conduct Medal. The next day he reenlisted for 4 years. He was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer and served in the Naval Reserves during the Korean War until he retired from the Navy in November 1952. Richard worked for the Navy at the San Diego Naval station as a civilian for 20 years. He was a member of the fleet reserve association and Scottish Rite Valley of Madison. Chief Warrant Officer Richard Peter Winkle passed away April 5th 1977, he is buried at the Greenwood Memorial Park, San Diego, California.
