The USS CYANE was a British Royal Navy warship, which was captured by the American frigate USS Constitution during the War of 1812. The Constitution was known for its successes against British warships, and the Cyane was a major success. Offering an assemblage of six autograph letters signed to seaman Ward Pringle from Elijah, his father, and a friend. The letters are mostly chatty with his father lamenting the fact that his son became a seaman instead of working his trade. These deaths likely would have been caused by disease. Single page, 8 x 10, ALS Levering writes from the Navy Yard, July 14, 1823, to Ward in quarantine. Chatty letter regarding marriages and similar information. Concludes, Give my respects to Mercer, Glover & all my old shipmates. It is an employment that I was very sorry to have you go into. I have been much more agreeable to me if you followed your trade. I have not received a line from you in about twenty-two months.
