Offered here is a great Cruise book for the USS David R. This is a cruise book for the USS David R. A USS Spruance DD-963 class Destroyer. This book chronicles the 1979 1980 WestPac cruise of the David R Ray where she sailed from her homeport of San Diego Calif. The David R Ray then patrolled the South China Sea and proceeded to the Indian Ocean where she visited Diego Garcia which is really out in the middle of nowhere, then the Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf area where the Ray continued to patrol assigned areas of operations to protect US interest in the regions. She sailed with the USS Ingersol DD-990 where they beat the 990 in a arranged drag race to help moral during this long cruise escorting the carrier USS Independence CV-62. Then the orders to head home came and the Ray proceeded back towards the South China Sea and spent time at the Subic Bay Naval base to again refuel, take on provisions and was dry docked for lower hull maintenance work all the while giving liberty to the crew to take in the sights and activities in the area. Then she headed her bow eastwards to Pearl Harbor and finally her homeport of San Diego. They are a great reference for model makers, naval enthusiasts, or historians. These books are becoming increasingly rare as the years go by, The Spruance class DD’s have all been decommissioned and were either sunk as targets in Sinkex exercises or scrapped. The David R Ray was decommissioned at Naval Station Everett Washington on Feb. 28th 2002 after 25 years of service and was towed to Bremerton WA. Ray was eventually towed out to sea and expended in a sinkex on July 11th 2008 during RIMPAC 2008. In deep water off of Kauai. 100 pages, heavily illustrated in black and white.
