In the 1950s, my father was stationed as the submarine base in San Diego as part of Squadron III. He served as the medical officer on board the submarine tender USS Sperry (AS-12) as part of Squadron III. I have seen other plaques for Squadron III and they feature a single dolphin in the lower right quarter of the plaque. This is definitely a Submarine Squadron II plaque, as the other three quarters all match. I just do not know what the “32” signifies on mine. The walnut plaque measures 11″ high and 9 3/4″ wide at the widest point. The brass plaque itself measures 5 1/2″ high by 4 1/4″ wide. Squadron Three was deactivated July 1, 1945 and reactivated in Guam on October 1, 1945. The United States built a fleet of diesel-electric submarines during the war and.
