ANTIQUE MILITARY NAVAL HAT. Case is about 18″ x 10″ x 7. Wonderful original bicorn / bicorne US Navy officer’s felt hat, with the original tin carrying case. Mid 19th century Civil War era. Green dyed feather plume cockade. Brass initials ” A O H” over an emblem of a harp and harpist. Label on the silk liner reads C. / CINCINNATI, with an eagle and shield logo. On the assumption that the ” A O H” are the officer’s initials, and that the harp insignia might represent his name, I searched for a 19th century officer named Harp or Harper. I found one vague reference to a pre-Civil War midshipman named Alexander Harp, but I could not pin it down any further than that. Case interior is dusty with feather filaments. Silk liner is detached. Some surface oxidation on the carrying case. But everything, the hat and the case, is structurally intact (all visible in the images). A FINE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF AN EARLY AMERICAN NAVAL OFFICER’S HAT.
