1961 US Navy USN First Fleet Seventh Fleet Commander Wall Plaque GRIFFIN MELSON
This 1961 US Navy USN First Fleet Seventh Fleet Commander Wall Plaque is in very good condition overall but does show modest signs of age and storage. No markings can be found on this wall plaque but production appears to have taken place sometime between July 1960 and October 1961. The wooden base is in good condition but shows light crazing in the finish and a few small blemishes. The backside of the wooden base has a small blue sticker with the letters M. Written on it, the sticker has been left exactly as it was found. The medallion affixed to the wooden plaque depicts the insignia of the US Navy’s First Fleet, which was active between 1947 and 1973. It appears to be made of brass and is of strong, quality construction. The plate just below the medallion is inscribed: PRESENTED TO VADM C. GRIFFIN USN COMMSEVENTHFLT BY VADM C. This inscription would strongly appear to indicate that the plaque was given to Admiral Charles Donald Griffin by Admiral Charles Leroy Melson and that this plaque was a unique, one of a kind piece that personally belonged to Admiral Griffin. Both of these men have fascinating and storied careers that stretch from World War 2 through Vietnam, with Admiral Griffin playing a pivotal role during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis serving as Deputy Chief of Staff for Fleet Operations and Readiness. Admiral Melson served as Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy as well as President of the Naval War College. During World War 2, Melson was engaged in anti-submarine actions against German U-Boats on the USS Champlin in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters. Total weight is 3 pounds 15 ounces. This piece would make a welcome addition to any advanced US Navy collection and is ready to display. Please examine the photographs carefully for the best description of condition.
