Navy service dress visor cap for Captains (CAPT/0-6) and Commanders (CDR/0-5). Commonly worn with the Service Dress Blue and Service Dress White uniforms. Made by Bancroft Cap Company, Framingham, MA. Exact age of the cap is unknown, but it may be from the 1950s to 1960s. There is a label on the inside crown of the cap that reads, “Makers of fine caps for over 50 years, ” and since the Bancroft Cap Company was founded in 1901, the cap may be from the 1950s. In addition, the cap has Bancroft’s Zephyr “Pac-Cap” feature, created in the 1950s, which allows the cap’s crown to be folded forward on a hinge after removing the cap badge, enabling the cap to be packed for travel without being crushed. Cap appears to be in excellent vintage condition with signs of wear and age, such as fading, yellowing, a few small stains and spots, some areas of discoloration on raised areas (perhaps due to light), and some frayed and/or loose threads and small “knots” on the white cloth cover. The black fabric band appears to be in excellent vintage condition with some frayed and/or loose threads. The interior leather sweatband appears to be in excellent vintage condition with a few areas of discoloration, some minor scratches, scrapes, abrasions, wrinkles, and creases, some areas where the gold printed lettering has worn away, and frayed and/or loose threads on the ribbon tying the sweatband together at the back of the cap. The clear plastic insert on the interior crown of the cap appears to be in excellent vintage condition with yellowing, discoloration, spots or stray marks, minor scratches, scrapes, and abrasions, some wear to the printed logo, and some minor soiling from wear. The eagle, shield, and anchors cap badge appears to be in two pieces and is in excellent vintage condition with minor scratches, scrapes, abrasions, and some minor discoloration and/or oxidation along the top edges of the eagle’s wings, head, and beak. Appear to be in excellent vintage condition with minor scratches, scrapes, and abrasions. Gold brocade adjustable chinstrap and bullion oak leaves on visor are toned with age but have a very nice patina. There are several small loose metal threads on the bullion oak leaves. There appear to be a few loose and/or frayed threads on the chinstrap. The black felt-like material on the exterior of the visor appears to be in excellent vintage condition. The underside of the visor appears to be in excellent condition. A very nice example of a vintage U. Navy service dress visor cap for senior officers!
