Approx 9 1/2″ x 12″ (approx 1″ thick) large hanging wooden wall plaque (with approx 4 1/2″ x 5 metal disc) in the shape of a shield. It was awarded in May 1971 to a person named IRON MIKE by the DAMBUSTERS for his service in the U. Navy’s Attack Squadron 195 (ATKRON 195) VA-195’DAMBUSTERS’ from November 1969 – May 1971. This wall plaque weighs approximately 1 3/4 lbs. VA-195 was so designated on 24 August 1948. The squadron deployed aboard the USS Princeton and was heavily engaged during the Korean War in action in support of U. Marines trapped near the Chosin Reservoir from 1950-51. At this time they earned their new nickname “Dambusters” when they destroyed the Hwachon Reservoir dam in North Korea, in one of the most significant achievements of the war. During the period of this plaque (1969-71) VA-195 transitioned to the Vought A-7E Corsair II aircraft aboard the USS Kitty Hawk and continued to participate in the Vietnam War right up to the Communist invasion of South Vietnam in 1972.
