Hamilton Model 22 Chronometer on gimbal mount inside a 3 tier Mahogany box Movement serial # 2F22000 and movement case # 13143 stamped on case side, case back (inside), and bezel. 21 jewel movement adjusted to 6 positions and temperature. Production ordered by U. S navy- bureau of ships- 1942 and marked as such on movement. Brass parts look free of defect or scratching with finger oil on locking arm and crown wheel. Light soiling on gimbal and movement case body. Dial has 1 light stain between 9 and 10 o’clock and some rubs in the seconds dial, otherwise light in color and the crystal shows no scratches. I had not wound this in over 30 years, and after doing so, It ran down completely, keeping time. My grandfather was a watchmaker from the late 1920’s thru the 70’s and he kept this on his bench to regulate pocket watches that came in for cleaning and repair. It is a high quality movement, maybe the best in its time. Even if this runs accurately now, I would recommend this timepiece to be cleaned. Hamilton recommends ANNUAL cleaning and oiling of this instrument under normal operating conditions to insure that it is in prime condition. It hasn’t been cleaned in over 50 years, and it is probably in need, not from dirt, but the lubricating oils become gummy over time…… You need to find a competent professional to do this work. The Mahogany outer box has water stains on the lid and marring on nearly every side. This never saw duty during the war, thus it was never exposed to saltwater environment like so many others.
