Offered for sale is this nice example of one of the rarest and most desirable post-WWII US Navy jackets: 1960 California Sportswear G1, which were made under a very small contract (limited production run and single production year). While the contract dates to 1960, the jacket design is almost that of an M-422a. The jacket has a small back panel, and front leather that wraps around past the underarm, reminiscent of M-422a designs. The pockets are also quite far from the zipper, and the shoulders are a bit tight, especially for a jacket from 1960. Note that the pocket flaps are also angled. They also generally featured thick and stiff goatskin hides, which is debated as likely being vegetable tanned vs chrome tanned which was the more common tanning method of the day. Moreover, similar to several M422a contracts, the length is cut longer than most G1s. Standard to this era, there’s no USN paint on the collar, but black paint on the aluminum Talon zipper, and a perforation on the wind flap. The condition is good for its age, though some ticking in the hide exists throughout- most notably across the shoulder blades. California Sportswear G1s fit large, and this size 40 is no exception. For reference, I generally wear a 42 or 44 in G1s (as well as A2s), and this fits me comfortably.
