The contract to build Archerfish was awarded on 25 June 1968 and her keel was laid down on 19 June 1969 at Groton, Connecticut, by the Electric Boat Division of the General Dynamics Corporation. She was launched on 16 January 1971, sponsored by Miss Mary Conover Warner, and commissioned at her home port, New London, Connecticut, on 17 December 1971 with Commander Ralph Gordon Bird in command. Following upkeep, she voyaged to the Narragansett Bay in early May 1974 to carry out sonar evaluation projects. On 27 May 1974, she proceeded to Port Everglades, Florida, for further testing. She then continued on to the Caribbean to take part in Atlantic Submarine Exercise KILO 2-74 near the Bahamas. On 10 June 1974, Archerfish arrived at New London and began testing and evaluating new sonar equipment. Archerfish departed New London for the Bahamas once again on 9 September 1974 to participate in Atlantic Submarine Exercise KILO 1-75. Upon its completion she took part in naval mine testing near Port Everglades. 1975 In February and March 1975, Archerfish carried out special operations in the western Atlantic Ocean. She left Norfolk on 12 December 1977 crossed the Atlantic, spent the Christmas holidays in port at Lisbon, Portugal, and entered the Mediterranean Sea on 28 December 1977. While operating with the United States Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean, she participated in Chief of Naval Operation Project “Over the Horizon Testing” and, during March 1978 took part in Exercise Dogfish. She concluded her deployment with her arrival at Norfolk in May 1978. Between 2 July and 4 August 1978, Archerfish conducted a midshipman training cruise on 23 August 1978 and began participation in Exercise Northern Wedding, a NATO exercise that occupied her through 8 October 1978. Archerfish got underway for the Arctic on 14 March 1979. During her cruise there she traveled over 9,000 nautical miles (17,000 km) under the polar ice cap and surfaced through it 23 times, once at the North Pole. Archerfish arrived in Plymouth, England, on 11 May 1979 for a six-day visit and then proceeded to Zeebrugge, Belgium. She left Belgium on 21 May 1979 bound for New London, which had once again become her home port, on 5 June 1979. In mid-July 1979, Archerfish entered the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, for a repairs and alterations. She got underway again on 3 October 1979 and headed to the West Indies for acoustic trials and weapons testing. She arrived at New London on 21 November 1979 and ended the year there in upkeep. On 23 May 1980, Archerfish left New London for the North Atlantic Ocean to conduct special operations. Construction and commissioning The contract to build Sunfish was awarded to the General Dynamics Quincy Shipbuilding Division in Quincy, Massachusetts, on 26 March 1963 and her keel was laid down there on 15 January 1965. She was the only nuclear submarine built at the former Fore River Shipyard as well as the only submarine built there since 1925. She was launched on 14 October 1966, sponsored by Mrs. Byrd, the wife of United States Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, and commissioned on 15 March 1969, with Commander Richard L. A short dedependents’ cruise in late August 1969 was followed by post-shakedown repairs and alterations at Groton, Connecticut. The last two weeks of 1969 were devoted to a leave and recreation period for the crew. Sunfish spent early 1970 in upkeep periods and several short cruises in preparation for an extended deployment. She was deployed from 16 June to 26 August 1970, when she arrived at her home port, Charleston, South Carolina. She deployed again from 6 October to 1 December 1970. Sunfish put to sea again on 22 January 1971 to participate in a short fleet exercise, but her operational commitments changed after she left port and she did not return until 9 March 1971. She made a cruise to Port Everglades, Florida, in April 1971, followed by a fleet exercise. She spent the remainder of 1971 participating in antisubmarine warfare exercises with destroyers and patrol aircraft. Sunfish departed Charleston on 3 January 1972, for a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and a tour of duty with the United States Sixth Fleet. The overhaul was completed in August 1973, and Sunfish proceeded to New London, Connecticut, for refresher training. She touched at Charleston in early November 1973, then continued to the Caribbean Sea for sound training and weapon systems tests. She operated along the United States East Coast from New London to Cape Kennedy, Florida, until June 1974. On 25 June 1974, Sunfish stood out of Charleston to begin a deployment. The contract to build her was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut on 21 March 1986, and her keel was laid down on 29 January 1990. She was launched on 4 January 1992 sponsored by Lynn Martin, and commissioned on 9 January 1993 with Commander Richard K. Springfield is homeported at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine and is assigned to Submarine Squadron FOUR. In mid-2004, Springfield began an extensive overhaul, or Depot Modernization Period (DMP), at the Electric Boat shipyard in Groton. In addition to normal periodic maintenance and repairs, Springfield received extensive modernization in fire control systems, sonar processing, weapons launch systems, and communications outfit, a ring laser gyro inertial navigation system, as well as stealth improvements and engine room upgrades. The modernization was the first major overhaul and repair job for Electric Boat in almost 25 years. The overhaul was plagued by cost and time overruns, and when finally completed in December 2005, it was several months late and well over budget.
