It depicts the US Navy sailors doing a Single Stick sword drill on board the USS Tennessee. USS Tennessee, originally USS Madawaska, was a screw frigate built of wood at the New York Navy Yard in Brooklyn, New York, and launched as Madawaska on 8 July 1865. Powered by two Ericsson vibrating-lever engines, Madawaska departed New York City for sea trials 14 January 1867, Commander Francis A. Remaining at sea for one week, she steamed nearly 1,000 nautical miles (1,150 statute miles; 1,852 km) before returning when her supply of coal was exhausted. She was renamed Tennessee 15 May 1869. By 1879 she was flagship of the North Atlantic Squadron under Rear Admiral Robert W. Wyman, with Captain David B. In The Steam Navy of the United States, Frank M. It is very large (double folio size), measuring approximately 22 x 10.5 inches (56 x 26.5 cm). The picture is about 19.25 x 9 inches, with a caption below. There is 4-inch article on the USS Tennessee on the back of the page.. The print has a fold in the middle, where it was folded into the magazine long ago. The fold line is clean. However, there are about several small pinhead holes along the fold line from where it was sewn into the journal long ago. See scan for an accurate view of the condition. An important and likely unknown image of the Second Division First Squadron Pacific Fleet by Chicago photographer C. This panoramic silver gelatin print is clear and sharp. Notice the difficulty in trying to photograph this image without reflections but it is still in its partically sealed original framing and I did want to disturb it. Seal says it was framed by Little`s 426 Broadway Los Angeles. This outstanding photograph is 8 x 18 3/4 inches in a 9 x 19 3/4 frame. The photograph in identified on the lower left corner and dated 1908 with the word Waterman below.. Hard to see in the photos but it is plain to the naked eye.
