Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. Editorial that appeared in the New York Sun, September 1897. The Navy began what became the S-3 Viking program in 1964 to replace the piston-powered S-2 Tracker. Known originally as VSX – for “carrier-based antisubmarine warfare aircraft-X” – a formal request for proposal was issued in April 1968. A joint General Dynamics-Grumman team and the then-Lockheed Aircraft Corp. Were chosen from among the competitors to refine their proposals. Although Lockheed had four decades of land-based antisubmarine warfare experience dating back to the World War II-era Hudson, the company had only built one carrier-based aircraft to that point, the T2V-1 SeaStar trainer. To build a strong Navy-oriented team, Lockheed first brought on LTV Aerospace, formerly Vought, with its long history in carrier aviation, as a partner. Then the Federal Systems Division of Sperry Rand was added to develop the aircraft’s computerized acoustic detection system, a first for an airborne antisubmarine warfare platform. The Lockheed team was declared the winner of the VSX competition on August 4th, 1969. VF-84 was established on July 1, 1955 as VF-86 but changed to VF-84. This was the third unit to be named VF-84 and they assumed the nickname “Jolly Rogers”. F-14A 160408 c/n 264 made an appearance in the movie “Executive Decision” as Vic 201. In 1993 and assigned to VF-84 160408 deployed with the USS Theodore Roosevelt on March 11, 1993 until September 8 for a cruise to the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Red Sea. This would be their last on USS Theodore Roosevelt as they were disestablished on October 1, 1995. Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was first flown on December 21st, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood film Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy’s primary maritime air superiority fighter. During the 76 days Ira Cassius Kepford spent with VF-17 “Jolly Rogers” he shot down 16 enemy aircraft. His first F4U was BuNo. 17684 “White 29″ and served him well during his first 13 kills. On January 30, 1944 15 Corsairs from VF-17 were escorting TBFs on a raid on Rabaul and encountered about 25 Japanese Zekes along with Tonys and Zeros. Several Japanese fighters were destroyed with the loss of several Corsairs. Kepford claimed one Zeke and one Tony but “17684” was damaged and ground looped on landing destroying the aircraft.
