USS Daly departed the United States on March 18, 1953, sailing westward across the Pacific. Following her Far Eastern service, Daly continued westward through the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean, completing a circumnavigation of the globe before returning to the United States on January 15, 1954. The volume specifically identifies itself internally as “A cruise book” and The Cruise Book. Contents include a history of USS Daly, commanding officer and officers, extensive crew roster and portraits, cruise narrative, ports of call, shipboard activities, sports, crew humor and photographs documenting the deployment. USS Daly was commissioned in 1943 and named for legendary U. Marine Sergeant Major Daniel Joseph Daly, twice awarded the Medal of Honor for separate acts of heroism. She earned eight battle stars for World War II service and one battle star for Korean War service. Included are two particularly interesting pieces of loose period material. USS Daly Thanksgiving Dinner Menu – Original shipboard Thanksgiving menu associated with the deployment. Thanksgiving fell on November 26, 1953. Singapore Tiger Standard Newspaper Clipping – November 24, 1953 – Original contemporary clipping reporting the presence of USS Daly and other U. Navy destroyers at Singapore during the homeward portion of the world cruise. Both items were found loose with this copy and are offered as associated period ephemera. They are not represented as having originally been bound into or publisher-issued with the book. A specialist with Navy Cruise Books reviewed photographs of this copy, confirmed that it is an authentic period cruise book, and described it as rare. The specialist noted that cruise books of this era were commonly produced in relatively small quantities and were often printed at overseas ports during deployment. The exact printer, place of publication, publication date and original print run remain unidentified. No claim is made that this is the only surviving copy. Original vintage hardcover in good overall condition for its age. Interior remains well preserved overall, with photographs, illustrations, portraits and printed material clear and highly presentable. Please examine photographs for complete condition details. An uncommon contemporary record of a Korean War-era U. Navy deployment and complete circumnavigation of the globe, accompanied by original period shipboard and port-of-call ephemera. Of particular interest to collectors of U. Navy cruise books, Fletcher-class destroyers, Korean War naval history, USS Daly memorabilia and 1950s militaria.
