USS Key West (SSN-722) was a Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine built by Newport News Shipbuilding. She was commissioned on 12 September 1987, served 37 years, fired Tomahawks in the opening strikes on Afghanistan in October 2001, won the Battle “E” three times, and was decommissioned in 2024. The engraved plate reads “Presented to Seawolf Project, 12 September 1987″, her commissioning day. The Seawolf Project was the NAVSEA program office building the next-generation SSN-21 Seawolf class, the Navy’s most advanced attack submarine of the late Cold War. The cast medallion shows a submarine breaking the waves, with her motto “Libertate Clavis Tenacitas et Ingenium” (the key to freedom is tenacity and resourcefulness). Maker label on the back: Owlp Pattern & Foundry, Norfolk, VA. Age patina on the cast medallion and brass plate. Light wear on the wood, as pictured. Measurements. Height: 10.5″. Width: 9″ Keywords: US Navy, submarine, SSN-722, Key West, Los Angeles class, 688, Seawolf, NAVSEA, commissioning, Cold War, plaque, militaria.

Very rare only example i have ever seen for sale, direct from a navy CPO estate who served on the USS Valdez…. One of the main things denoting this to be a correct commissioning medal is the DE designation this designation only existed July of 1974 to June of 1975. DE stood for Destoryer Escort which was changed to Frigate. USS Valdez (FF-1096) is the forty-fifth Knox-class frigate and was built by Avondale Shipyard, Westwego, Louisiana, and originally designated as an ocean escort (DE-1096). Commissioned in the United States Navy from 1974 to 1991, she was the first U. In 1998, Valdez was leased to Taiwan and renamed Yi Yang (FF-939). Well worth a read and some research…. If something ever happens with china down the line this very rare never seen medal might be worth a fortune. A small lot of other items belonging to him is also listed… Commissioning medals are tough to price they rarely enter the market and prices range from 20 dollars to thousands… Please see my other militaria and collectibles!
