This is an original maritime bridge equipment and naval memorabilia collection preserved by a career United States Navy Command Master Chief with 31.5 years of service. This is a heavy, authentic maritime grouping consisting of original brass, wood, and naval bridge equipment. Clock is currently functional. The hour hand needs minor adjustment and proper resecuring for perfect alignment, but movement runs and strikes. Chelsea clocks are among the most respected and collectible maritime clocks ever produced. ADDITIONAL ORIGINAL MARITIME ITEMS INCLUDED. Many items are heavy solid brass and show authentic maritime construction. All items show honest age and service wear consistent with use. Brass items display natural patina and age can polish up nicely. Helm wheel is structurally sound with cosmetic wear including scratches and dings consistent with use. These have all been out of production for several years. Only old stock supplies are available. This is a complete set of 13 different U. These can be used as hat pins, lapel pins, etc. All are brand new. Most have one pin on the back except the HOO YAH pin, which has 2 pins so it won’t rotate when affixed to your hat, lapel, etc. All pins are metal and include either rubber or metal clutch(s) on the back of the pin. This keeps the pin on your hat, or lapel, or wherever you put it. Each pin measures approximately 1-inch. They are very nicely detailed. Thank you for taking the time to read through the description of this amazing and historical collection of documents, personal items, medals and more from a Pearl Harbor Survivor. LOTS THAT ARE FROM A SAILOR WHO WAS ABOARD THE USS VESTAL. DOCKED AND MOORED TO THE USS ARIZONA DURING THE ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR DEC. THE CREW RESCUED MEMBERS OF THE ARIZONA AS WELL, THAT HAD BEEN BLOWN OVERBOARD AND, IN A FEW CASES RIGHT ONTO THE USS VESTAL. Found on line information. Accordingly, she hoisted her anchor and was beached on Aiea Shoal, in Pearl Harbor’s northeastern corner. Vestal was repaired by mid-February 1942. Vestal served in both World Wars. She was damaged during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and received two battle stars for her World War II service. THE LOTS WITHIN, WILL TAKE YOU THROUGH DIFFERENT PHASES OF THIS SAILORS COLLECTION OF MEMORABILIA. PART OF THIS GROUP IS OF HIS CROSSING THE EQUATOR CARDS, VFW, AND ORDERS. THE NEXT PART, ARE HIS MILITARY MEDALS, ORDERS, ADVANCEMENTS FROM PRE-MILITARY TRAINING, TO INITIAL MILITARY TRAINING AND ON WARD. 18 DAYS AFTER PEARL HARBOR, AND MORE. The first item is a log book photo album. It includes Memories, photos and more. After the memories are 10 pages of My Log and Dairy. The pages contain information from 9-11-1941 Pearl Harbor to San Pedro, Ca. 7 1/2 days 2209 miles. At his point he had 7077 miles logged with the Vestal, but the book starts on date posted just above. Also discusses sea conditions, time are on the 24-hour clock. Pay day, Movie night Night in the Tropics. 10-3-41 back to Pearl Harbor. After that entry the diary picks up after the chaos at Pearl Harbor when the USS Vestal was underway to Sura, Fiji Islands. 8-15-1942.10 days, 2763 miles / 12049 total on Vestal. That day in August’42 they spent having drill after drill and firing of all guns. Next day weighed anchor and headed to Tongatabu 438 miles. Couple pages of notes while in Tongatabu. 10-23-1942 off to New Caledonia, then was escorted to New Hebrides with a destroyer. 11-13-1942 Noumea to Espiritu Santo 896 miles and then 4-41-1943 to Auckland New Zealand. We’ve gotten to the back of the diary and in May of 1943 went from Auckland to San Diego, Ca. 1944 went from San Pedro to Samoa, then April 1944 Samoa to New Guinea. Total of 22, 063 miles. We now enter the photograph section. The Mighty “V” (USS VESTAL) 5×7. More side views if Diamond Head. Hijinks’, haircuts, jungles shots, waterfalls, old woody station wagon tour car. High bridges, visit to King’s statue, on and off pics of buddies, and some of home. Sailor in pirate costume, others in diapers, nice shot of sailor in front of Kau Kau Korner drive inn. Known as the Crossroads of the Pacific. More crossings photos lots of sailors, looking at faces most appear to be very young men and most always smiling, having fun. Superb photo of Cross Roads of the Pacific with cities and miles to places like Tokyo, Sydney, New York and more. USS Vestal in camo, distance and close up 5X7. The rest are home shots of family, his brother, pilot, dogs, kids home. Lovely collection all placed in corner holders. NOW INTHE BACK OF THE. BOOK ARE 4 CARDS AND THEN SOME DOCUMENTS OF WHICH SOME ARE PASTED IN AND OTHERS LOOSE. THIS IS LOT USN 10. INCLUDED WITH LOT 9 THE ALBUM. After that there are documents / orders. Daily Employment Schedule 8-19-1942. Another 8-24-42, 8-17-42, a Sympathy Chit signed by the Chaplain. Subpoena and Summons, the Trusty Shellbacks vs E. Charged with impersonating a River Street Cowboy. Last but not least another photo of the USS Vestal. Mounted on cardboard, nice side shot 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch. Right lower corner crease. THIS SECTION HAS DOCUMENTS, FOLDERS, PHOTOS, MEDALS AND BUTTONS AND COVETED DOG TAG. All items were collected while the sailor was aboard or off duty from the USS VESTAL. Handbook for Camp John P. Pryor, Presidio of Monterey, Ca. July 8 to August 6th 1938. Give’ his name Group A, Calvary branch. His home was in Glendale Ca. Stained cover, interior is fine. This is the camp used for the Citizens Military Training Camps. There are two Individual Score Books for The Rifle. One is in Ex condition having just his name on the cover. Book was never used. Another in VG has one page of target notations, otherwise unused. Also, Citizens’ Military Training Camps Military Training Certificate for Earl S. Smith having attended the RED course, cavalry arm. Later we have US Naval Training Station, San Diego. Certificate for Earl Sanford Smith, has been appointed to Apprentice Petty Officer 3rd Class. Has a tear top center. 22, 1940, also USNTS San Diego. George Washington’s Birthday Dinner 1940. Has a few thumb tac holes near top of cover. Now onto the photo section. One of Earl Sanford Smith in 5 1/2 x 7-inch photo frame. News clipping showing Earl on left and brother Alfred Allen Smith who went on to be a pilot. This clipping was from the Glendale News-Press Nov 14, 1944. Shows sailors all on deck. Here’s a piece of ephemera you don’t see every day. Actually 2, USS Vestal Motion Picture Program. May 1, 1941 playing The Invisible Woman. (problem pappy) with John Barrymore, John Howard and Virginia Bruce. The other one is April 30, 1941. Michael Shayne Private Detective. Starring Lloyd Nolan, Marjorie Weaver, Walter Able, Joan Valerie. Smith F1C to msmith Metalsmith, 2c. Another similar order set of many more names than the first. August 1, 1942 USS Vestal, from Msmith 2c to Msmith 1c div. Letter from Mom’s home in Glendale, Ca. To EAS M1C, USS Vestal C/o Fleet Postmaster, San Francisco. Since this section has personal photos and personal documents, we put the medals he earned in this group along with buttons from uniforms he wore. One of the key items in the collection are Smith’s personal DOG TAGS. Two bars with 6 different ribbons, 4 battle stars. It also once repaired helped to clear the harbor and repair others going back out to sea. Then we have one I have no name for. Colors run Green, yellow, black and red, then repeated again. Next National Defense Medal with one battle star. For Defense between 1939 and Dec 7, 1941. Smith was at Pearl Harbor the whole time. Second row: Navy Good Conduct Medal. Center one I also could not find, with rainbow colors. Last one, Red, Black, white, red. No info on that one as well. Buttons; 8 X brass buttons 7/8-inch diameter. 3 x olive drab and navy-blue buttons. One US collar button. 1 ruptured duck metal 1/2 inch. 1 US Navy Honorable Discharge metal. One USN Anchor and Rope pin. 5 Navy blue buttons with Anchor and Rope design. 4 tan / butterscotch color (maybe Bakelite) with just anchor. LAST but certainly not least the ID tags for this Pearl Harbor survivor. With Serial number and USN “A” -1-42 on it. All collected by aka Fred, nickname was his father’s first name. Earl Sanford Smith, a survivor of the event when the USS Vestal was moored against the USS Vestal. Smith was assigned after the bombing to going out into the burning harbor in a motor launch to recover injured and dead sailors. It was like trying to save lives, and we did pull a few out who were injured, but most we just had to tie a rope to the leg and pull them out and stack them like cords of wood. Taken from the Press Democrat, June 9, 2017 after his passing at the age of 94. His wife died in 2006. A copy of this press release on line, will be included in this lot. Thanksgiving Day 20, November 1941 menu. Inside the cover is a list of the Commander R. Luker, Captain Cassin Young and other executive officers. Inside of back cover was the menu. Turkey, ham, and all the fixings plus ice cream bars, cigarettes and coffee. Notations on reverse for USS Vestal 11-15-41. Has some sun fading on back, overall, very good condition. 8 x 5 inches. Another rare and scarce menu, from the USS Vestal. This menu would be quite a find in someone’s memory trunk. Bailey features the dinner as only a metalsmith could. There is no mention on the menu of the Pearl Harbor event. On the back of the cover, it announces a 3-act Meal-o-Rama. Performed by the crew of the USS Vestal and Mr. It lists the director, case, and stage hands. Has folds and some light stains. Destroyers in the U. Navy are generally named for Navy and Marine Corps personnel who have distinguished themselves in the service of their country. Bears the name of a Navy commander awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. When USS Arizona blew up, he was blown overboard along with many members of his crew. Just as the first of the crew began to flee a figure, like some sea creature, rose from the water and stood athwart the gangway. It was Ted Young… Where the hell do you think you’re going? He asked the first sailor. Commander Young got the fires under control, picked up survivors from USS Arizona and managed to move USS Vestal across the harbor where he beached her for later salvage. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Cassin Young was promoted to captain and given command of the heavy cruiser USS San Francisco. On the night of November 12-13, 1942, during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, Captain Young died amidst an avalanche of shellfire from three Japanese warships. For his conspicuous gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. (DD793) was commissioned in 1943, honoring this gallant officer. Map of the Pacific War Are 1942. This map is much small, and has tears, and stains. 2 are Matson Lines WIRELESS, World News. With news from the states and also around the world. Most being regarding military situations. Baggage tag for First Class Matson Line for E. Smith / back has S and NAVY stamped on it. Two French newspapers 18 x 18 inch printed two sides. Mostly in French but has some notes For Our Allied Readers in English. Both papers the same. Two Southern Edition (American) issues of Guinea Gold. 1 is April 24, 1944, and the other is April 25, 1944. Both folded and in VG condition. 24th headline 60,000 Jap Troops Isolated by Swift New Guinea Moves. 25th headline ” Ferocious Daylong “Blitz rocks Naz held Western Europe. Both papers have war and related news from around the world. Each 4 pages front and back. ” Headlines: “THE USS OGLALA 39 NAVY DAY. It aided in laying the North Sea Mine Barrier. 1928 became the USS Ocala. The next paper is from August 17, 1945. Headline is: OGLALA CELEBRATES 2nd VICTORY. It was VJ day, Victory over Japan. The paper is filled with join and celebration. Also listed their names and rank. The final part of has the following: 1942 New Caledonia Illustrated. 32 pages, of photos, map, drawings of New Caledonia and its people. It gives a brief history of the area, and its resources. It contains 32 unused postal stamps pasted to the page. Reverse side is blank. Next an American Red Cross map guide to Sydney and Suburbs. Wrinkles, tattered in spots. Next a near mint postcard folder with 10 postcards inside in accordion style. Last but not least a photo book from Kland’s Fotos and Supplies El Cajon Blvd, San Diego. Has 7 2 3/4 x 3 3/4-inch photos. On the back of the last one is our survivors name Earl S. 40-4, US Training Station, San Diego, Jan 27 1940. Otherwise we will not entertain any other offers.
