Before proceeding, I found this button during an estate haul. The button has a United States Navy Emblem of the Eagle on the front and a simple “+” sign on the back and nothing else. This does not seem common for USN uniform buttons to have that marker on the back. I tried to AI search this left to right and up and down and I kept getting different definitions of what it possibly could be. One search states it could be from as early as the late 1770’s and another says it could be from WW2 time; but with the USN emblem on the front and then the possible German Nazi plus sign which the search possibly states could be from the German Nazi railroad workers or soldiers has me super confused (why would two random parts be on one button)? I’m not a history buff by any means, but if anyone can gather info or knows anything about this button, please educate me. It seems very rare, interesting, and unique. Again, if anyone has any knowledge please fill me in. Please feel free to google search this button and tell me what you find. I found it at the bottom of an old estate jewelry bag. NAVY OFFICER UNIFORM COAT BUTTON – ALBERT NA 62B. Navy officer uniform coat button from the 1820s (post-War of 1812 and pre-Civil War). This button was listed as the “#2″ design in the 1820 Navy Uniform Order and was prescribed for use on the uniforms of Masters Commandants and Lieutenants. The front side has an eagle perched on a branch, holding a shield containing an anchor with his left wing and looking over his right shoulder. The background is lined and there are 13 stars around the border. The back side is marked “ROBINSON & CO” AND “EXTRA RICH”, the mark of Richard Robinson & Co. This one-piece button measures about 7/8 (22 mm) in diameter. It is listed in Albert’s book as NA 62B. It is guaranteed to be a genuine U. Navy officer button from the 1820s and NOT a reproduction. Condition of this 1820s Navy officer button is VERY GOOD. It is structurally undamaged and much of the original gilt is still intact. Overall, this button looks great and displays well. It would make a fine addition to any collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I’ve provided and judge condition for yourself.
