The serial numbers on the sextant, the identifying plaque on the box, and the Inspection Certificate all match. The following items are included. The sextant with its telescope. Screwdrivers – one Yankee #90 and one Yankee #95. Bronze thumbscrew-style adjusting tool. Mahogany plywood box with all hardware except the key to the lock. A “Certificate of Eccentricity” dated 3/21/1945. A 30+ page manual covering maintenance and overhaul specific to the USN Mark II sextant. Sample page shown in last photo. The sextant arm and its micrometer mechanism operate smoothly and the arm moves throughout its range without binding. The installed mirrors are in good condition. There are no spares for either mirror. The polarizing filters work, but they aren’t in great shape. There is some “fuzziness” to both and the index mirror has some light leaks around the edges. The black anodizing on the frame and telescope is unblemished. The telescope optics are clear and the focusing ring rotates smoothly. A couple of the small set screws are missing but this does not affect the telescope’s functionality. The box is in decent condition for its age. The veneer is worn in places and the edges and corners show wear. The photos show all six sides of the box so you can evaluate its condition. All in all this is an almost. WWII vintage sextant, in generally very good condition. Only the key to the lock and the spare mirrors are missing. The sextant will be VERY carefully packed. I’ve tried to be complete and to disclose all problems, but I may have missed something. Please check out all the pictures and do not hesitate to ask about anything.

1945 WWII US Navy Bendix Submarine Underwater Log Speed Indicator. Made by the Bendix Corporation, Marine Division, Brooklyn, NY. There is a place for a Serial Number but does appear to have been stamped. This information is faintly visible on the brass name tag on the unit. Other name tag info is visible in the photo. The brass indicator unit is 11-1/2″ wide x 13-1/2″ long x 7-3/4 tall and weighs 62 lbs. The bottom base is solid wood, 13-1/2″ wide x 15-1/4″ long x 3-1/4″ thick with a lamp post that is 35″ tall, weighs 13 lbs. Total weight is 75 lbs. I could not determine the history of the unit, if it was recovered from salvage of a sunken submarine or from decommisioning. The unit was repurposed as a lamp many years ago by mounting on a heavy solid wood base with a lamp. The indicator unit itself has not been modified. The unit is non-working but appears to have all it’s internal parts intact. The top cover plate is removable with the 8 allen head bolts. The brass unit appears to have been lacquered, the brass top plate was significantly discolored and has been cleaned. The bottom part of the case still has its lacquer coating with patina. The heavy glass window is original and has some minor corrosion from saltwater? Around the edges (see photos). The lamp shade looks like laced rawhide, I can’t say for sure, may be faux but is very heavy. Overall Diameter is about 7 1/4 Barometer was used by US Navy and is working and reads the same as my personal weather station. A very rare item. This is a genuine 1943 US Navy military sextant, in the original box. It isnt quite perfect (the horizon mirror is past its best) but it has clearly been used. US Navy Bureau of Ships E. Sextant Mark 2 Mod 0 (N) 29076. Contract no NXSX 42867 1943. Made by Bendix Aviation Corporation. Teterboro, New Jersey, USA. Numbers on the actual sextant and the certification match. Correction details dated Jan 9 1945. Original hardwood ply case with brass handle and catches, sound. Case is 30 x 28 x 14cm. Collection, and cash on collection, is welcome. I will not be leaving daily for despatches. I now have arrangements with Hermes for collection from me using a’safe place’ arrangement. However that collection will initially only be once per week to protect myself and my reliable local Hermes agent. Please also allow a little extra time for couriers.
