This is a very unique piece of art by one of the foremost sand artists R. It features the iconic wings of gold and is matted/framed. The sand artists is rough textured and in the light has elements that sparkle (just like sun hitting sand in the beach). The sand art piece is approximately 8″ x 10″ bordered by a 1.25 cloth matte and that is bordered by a raised wood style frame. Both the outer frame and the matte have light scratches or nicks/dings present. The face of the sand artists has a few light discoloration spots, but overall it’s in good shape with good color. The size of the frame is 18.25″ wide by 16.5″ and is approximately 1.5 raised. Please review pictures provided for details of condition and please ask any questions before purchasing.

For many traditions, Battle Insignia has been created to help “encourage” and “lift up” men at war. This is especially true for the US Navy. The interest of Young’s “Battle Insignia” continued to grow and requests to have Young’s artwork on submarines were in demand. Young created patches and artwork for the 14 submarines in Manitowoc, Wisconsin during the war. One of 14 submarines were named after a fish. Ray Young created artwork for men on the specific sub related to his piece of art. This Mapiro piece was gifted to George, a man whose name is handwritten in short detail on the back of the frame. After WW2, Ray Young worked with top notch design companies (while freelancing), including: Mil Print-Baby Ruth, Kingsbury Beer & was a Photo Retoucher and Steel Cabinet Designer for KOHLER’S and his Catalog’s. Young finished his career by creating and retouching at the Mirro Office at Manitowoc in Wisconsin for over 40 years. In 1991 the collection of fourteen went up on display at the Art Exhibit-The Maritime Museum. This Original RARE piece of Artwork is something you can view while remembering and honoring our history.
