This listing is for a new Century Wings Vought F-8E Crusader USN VF-211 Fighting checkmates, NP101, Commander Paul Speer, USS Bon Homme Richard, Vietnam May 19th, 1967 shot down a MiG-17. Item # CW 601628 Launch Configuration. This model was released in 2008 with only 3,000 pieces distributed world wide. Outer box has some scuff marks and small tears. Model in this listing belongs to my collection. Scale: 1/72 Length: 9.25″ Width: 5.75″ (wingspan) US Navy Fighter Squadron 211 (VF-211) Fighting Checkmates was the new designation given to Fighter Squadron 24 (VF-24) on March 9th, 1959. It traded its F-11F Tigers for F-8 Crusaders in July of that year. In 1961 VF-211 moved to NAS Miramar, which remained its home-base for the next 35 years. The Fighting Checkmates deployed to Vietnam seven times aboard the USS Hancock and once aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard. During this period, VF-211 pilots earned the title of “The MiG Killers, ” having downed eight enemy aircraft. The squadron transitioned to the F-14A Tomcat in 1975 and has been flying the F-18F Super Hornet since 2005. Vought F-8E Crusader Designed to meet a USN requirement for a supersonic air-superiority fighter, the Chance-Vought F-8 (originally F8U) was first flown on March 25th, 1955. The F-8 was the last American fighter to use guns as a primary weapon. Its powerplant was nearly identical to the one used by the F-100 Super Sabre, and it was the world’s first carrier-based aircraft to break the speed of sound. The US Navy used the Crusader in a traditional dogfighting interceptor role, while the Marines operated it as a strike/attack aircraft. Both flew the F-8 during the Vietnam War, and it remained in service for more than four decades. Century Wings 1:72 die-cast airplanes feature. Century Wings 1:72 Wings of Heroes 001633 Grumman F-14D Tomcat Diecast Model USN VF-31 Tomcatters, NK100 Santa Cat, USS Abraham Lincoln, Operation Iraqi Freedom, December 2002. Limited Edition 800 Pieces Worldwide. US Navy Fighter Squadron 31 (VF-31) Tomcatters was the new designation given to VF-3A on August 7th, 1948. The squadron transitioned from the F6F Hellcat through the F9F Panther, F2H Banshee, F3H Demon and F-4 Phantom II before upgrading to the F-14 Tomcat in 1981. The Tomcatters deployed several times with the F-14 on various Nimitz Class carriers. They deployed with the F-14 for the last time aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt in 2005 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was during this deployment that VF-31 became the last F-14 squadron to drop a bomb in combat. In 2002 VF-31 was onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and heading home from Operation Enduring Freedom when they were ordered back to take part in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Like many squadrons that were deployed over the Christmas season they painted an aircraft with a Santa theme so F-14D 164601 was chosen. Felix The Cat was painted on the tail wearing a small Santa hat still carrying his fused bomb. Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was first flown on December 21st, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood film Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy’s primary maritime air superiority fighter. Its design includes a variable geometry wing that can sweep back for high speed supersonic intercepts and forward for improved positioning in air to air dogfights. Nicknamed “Bombcat, ” the F-14 spent much of its late career in an air-to-ground role, carrying the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system. Century Wings’ 1:72 scale F-14 is exceptionally rich in detail with every access panel, exhaust vent and antenna faithfully reproduced. Crisp pad-printed markings cover the entire airframe and a detailed selection of weapons is provided. The hinged canopy locks securely in place leaving almost no visible gap, and inside is a detailed cockpit with removable crew figures. The landing gear and doors are reproduced as robust sub-assemblies for easy display. The standard release features an articulated swing wing, and certain special releases feature the aircraft in “launch configuration” with wings fixed in the full-forward position, leading and trailing edge flaps permanently deployed and the nose-gear compressed with launch bar extended. Century Wings Celebrates 10 Years of Excellence Edition. This model was released to celebrate 10th year Anniversary of the company establishment with only 1,500 pieces distributed world wide. Scale: 1/72 Length: 10.25″ Width: 10.75″ (wingspan). In 2006, an all new die-cast brand burst onto the scene with a remarkable 1:72 scale rendition of an F-14A Tomcat in VF-84 Jolly Rogers markings. This model significantly raised the bar for accuracy and detail in die-cast military aircraft models. Subsequent releases were eagerly snapped up by enthusiasts who wanted nothing but the best for their collections. US Navy Fighter Squadron 84 (VF-84) was established on July 1st, 1955. Three US Navy squadrons have used the name and insignia of the Jolly Roger: VF-61 (originally VF-17), VF-84, and VFA-103. While these are distinctly different squadrons that have no lineal linkage, they all share the same Jolly Rogers name, the skull and crossbones insignia and traditions. VF-84 adopted the name in 1960 while operating the FJ-3 Fury. The squadron transitioned through the F-8 Crusader and F-4 Phantom II before upgrading to the F-14A Tomcat in 1976. VF-84 deployed several times aboard the USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt before being disestablished on October 1st, 1995, and handing over the Jolly Rogers title to VF-103.
