This is a Brass Circular Insignia Medal with the Latin inscription E Navibus Pugnissima – Motto for the United States Navy’s Aircraft Carrier – USS ESSEX. An eagle clutching a shaft of wheat and acanthus leaves, with Poseidon’s hand holding a trident with the number “9” superimposed in front of the eagle.
