USS Key West (SSN-722) was a Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine built by Newport News Shipbuilding. She was commissioned on 12 September 1987, served 37 years, fired Tomahawks in the opening strikes on Afghanistan in October 2001, won the Battle “E” three times, and was decommissioned in 2024. The engraved plate reads “Presented to Seawolf Project, 12 September 1987″, her commissioning day. The Seawolf Project was the NAVSEA program office building the next-generation SSN-21 Seawolf class, the Navy’s most advanced attack submarine of the late Cold War. The cast medallion shows a submarine breaking the waves, with her motto “Libertate Clavis Tenacitas et Ingenium” (the key to freedom is tenacity and resourcefulness).
