WWII US M1 Helmet, Fixed Bale With First Pattern Hawley Liner, Named Navy Surgeon
WWII US M1 Helmet, Fixed Bale W/ First Pattern Hawley Liner, Named Navy Surgeon. This is a very early fixed bale helmet with a first pattern Hawley liner. The helmet shows use and has a coating of rust on the exterior. In the front of the helmet there is a name Billups (MC) carved in. It is tough to see but its there. The liner and shell also feature a white diamond marking inside. When I received it the liner was filled with dirt and spiderwebs, I did clean it out as it was disgusting and dirty. The liner also had a piece of torn webbing that had pulled away from the rivet, I pulled the piece back up to where it should be and sewed it back together, not a perfect fix but it helps it display well. I was able to identify the name to a James T. Billups in the Marine muster rolls that is listed as a Lt. In the medical corps but his the rolls also show him with the First Marine Aircraft Wing. But that would explain the (MC) after his name on the shell. Billups, Service number 107338. Born 1904 in Winters, TX and died 2008 in Texas. He was a Navy surgeon in WWII with the Medical Corps. Records show that he was attached to a Marine Air Wing. The helmet was found in a Texas garage.
