The Good Conduct medal has the original barrel locking clasp brooch and original ribbon. The ribbon is in near perfect condition. The planchet is also in near perfect condition, with no edge knocks. The reverse is officially hand engraved “VERLE/ROGER/POWELL/1935″. It includes a pin-back single ribbon bar. Includes a Shooting Badge that has a pin-back EXPERT brooch, which hangs a U. Fleet Championship Officers Pistol Match badge planchet, dated 1935. The reverse of the planchet is not engraved, and there is some dark spots, but is otherwise in very good condition. Includes a pair of US Army type dog-tags, stamped with his name, serial number, blood type and next of kin. This Good Conduct medal, pistol shooting badge and dog-tags, were awarded and issued to Radioman 2nd Class (RM2c) Verle Roger Powell. Powell was born in Earlville, Iowa, on March 6, 1909. He first enlisted in the Navy in July of 1931 at Des Moines, Iowa, and was later trained in Radio school. At one point in his Naval enlistment he was transferred to the USS West Virginia, in February of 1932, with the transfer initialed by then Captain C. In April of 1935, he was qualified as a Marksman in the Colt. 45 Pistol, but must have also competed for this Expert pistol badge. He was honorably discharge in July of 1935, when he was issued this Good Conduct medal. In March of 1943 he enlisted in the US Army and served until May of 1946, attaining an Officer promotion to Captain. He again served during the Korean War from September 1950 to May of 1952. He died at Tucson, Arizona, on January 17, 1983 and is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, at Phoenix, AZ. Louis, Archives, and a copy of a picture of his headstone. I should note that his Army records mention that he was also awarded the EAME Campaign medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal, the American Campaign medal and the WW2 Victory medal, but if issued the whereabouts of those medals is unknown. I also assume that he was eligible for the Korean Service and UN Korean Service medals, but his records do not reflex those awards.
