WW2 Navy Pilot Group Anti- U-Boat VPB-110 UK and ETO Patrols Joe Kennedy Unit
The group consists of his original naval aviator certificate dated June 19, 1942 making him Naval Aviator number 14656. He was assigned to fly four-engined patrol aircraft, and upon the commissioning of VPB-110 in July 1943 was assigned to the new unit along with Joseph P. Who later was killed in action, and earned the Navy Cross. He flew overseas with them, conducting missions during the vital months of late 1943 where anti-submarine activity in the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay was at its peak. Really quite cool and definitely historically important. He was transferred back to the US in May 1944, and then sent back to Europe in March 1945 with VPB-107, now one of their most senior pilots. He remained in the Naval Reserves after the war, and continued active flying through the early 1950s. He retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. The group consists of his Navy US Mint contract Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, the original Admiral Stark signed citation for the Air Medal, and his associated campaign medals, as well as his wrap brooch Naval Reserve medal and the later Reserve medal. The group also includes a clipping about him assisting in the forced landing of an aircraft while in charge of the air radar in Miami after the war, and the James Forrestal discharge paper. Also included with the group are three dog tags; two on his original neck loop. His named hat with LCDR rank insignia, his shoulder boards and leather name tag, along with a photo of him with his Reserve unit wearing the exact hat (at least it appears that way to me) are also with the group. Finally, the group has all three of his flight logs from flight training to his last flight in November 1951. This is a really super group to a pilot who was vital in winning the war against the U-boats in order to get cargo and troops to Europe in for operations in the Mediterranean and later for D-Day.
