Sifrein Fontaine Maury, Lieutenant, U. Navy Service Dress White Coat – WWI, Navy Cross Recipient, for distinguished and heroic action as Commanding Officer of the USS K-1 (K-class submarine). The service dress white coat is identified on the inside of the coat to S. It is in good condition with wear along the collar, cuffs and various areas shown in the pictures. There are a few areas of wear on the back of the coat and one area near the right sleeve where it has been repaired (see picture). The service dress white coat has shoulder boards on either shoulder with the rank of Lieutenant in gold bullion, with toning and patina on both. Sifrein Fontaine Maury – grandson of the famous Admiral Matthew Fontaine Maury of both the US and Confederate Navies, also known by the nicknames’Pathfinder of the Seas’,’Scientist of the Seas’ and’Father of Modern Oceanography and Naval Meteorology’. Sifrein graduated from Annapolis with the class of 1914. He was first assigned to the battleship Wyoming as a Midshipman and was on the Wyoming during the occupation of Vera Cruz. In 1916 he was transferred to the Submarine Tender Fulton and then to the USS Colorado (which was renamed the USS Pueblo). During WWI he was the commanding officer on the submarine USS K-1 in the Azores, where he was awarded the Navy Cross. For distinguished and heroic action as Commanding Officer of the U. K-1 engaged in the important, exacting and hazardous duty of patrolling the waters infested by enemy submarines, destroyers, and mines protecting vitally important convoys of troops and supplies; and in offensive and defensive action, vigorously and unremittingly prosecuted against all forms of enemy naval activity during World War I. After his return to the United States he was given command of the USS O-15, a Lake Torpedo Boats Company design submarine. He resigned his commission as a Lieutenant on March 16, 1920.
